Just wanted to send you a thank you for our wonderful holiday in your beautiful house.

It is rare for a holiday to exceed expectations but ours did.

The house was so well-equipped, perfectly located and full of those touches that make a place so special that I don't think the description on the website did it justice.

I don't think any of us will ever forget eating our provencal meals at the outside table, listening to the river and the screech owl, followed by an hour of lying on the loungers in the pitch dark looking at that amazing sky and spotting shooting stars. Not to mention driving up to Gourdon and being greeted by a violent thunderstorm - quite an experience.

London seems almost unbearable by comparison.

Dear Marion & Liz, I just want to thank you both for all the kind help and consideration in helping us choose Villa Rosa and in making our stay so enjoyable. We had a terrific time and were thoroughly satisfied with the accomodation. Would you pleas extend our personal thanks to the owners as well for being so considerate. To say we felt at home would be the understatement of the year. The villa was everything we could have asked for. If we had any criticism it would just be that a car was needed to go anywhere, but that really wasn't a major issue. Perhaps next time we'll choose something closer to a town or village.

After the scourge of the Black Death in the Vallis Bona (or Valbonne to you and I) during the 16th century, the Bishop of Grasse and the abbot of Lerins decided the valley had to be repopulated. They chose to plan the village on an ancient Roman grid system, á la New York, making the village unique and unlike other villages in the south of France, which tend to follow the curves of the hills. Valbonne is a charming medieval village inland in the Alpes- Maritimes, north-west of Antibes and to the north of the Provencal autoroute A8. The area, a valley with two streams flowing through it, La Brague and le Merlet, was known in the 12th century as Vallis Bona, "the good valley," which is how Valbonne got its name. The public square, the "forum" of the Roman towns, is at the intersection of the two principal avenues. This extremely attractive square, surrounded by arcades added in the 17th century, has been named Place des Arcades.

As one approaches the brow of the hill of the Basse Corniche, one is startled by the deep ultramarine bay spread out at the feet of the picture-perfect Villefranche-sur-Mer. Villefrance, founded in the 14th century by Charles II of Anjou as a duty-free fishing port, is the jewel in the crown of the French Cote d'Azur between Nice and Monaco. It is built on the wooded slopes encircling one of the most beautiful roadways in the Mediterranean, the three Corniches - high, middle and low. In the 1920s, it was the haunt of the poet/film-maker Jean Cocteau, and later Errol Flynn, then the Beat poet, Allan Ginsberg, and latterly U2; Tina Turner now has a villa there.

Cocteau's most celebrated creation in Villefrance is the interior of the tiny 14th century Chapelle de St-Pierre-des-Pêcheurs at the western end of the port, which he rescued from the fishermen who used it as a store for their equipment. He restored it in 1957 to its original function, covering the entire interior with evangelical murals depicting St Peter's life. He also filmed his famous film Orphée, in the well-know vaulted rue Obscure, which protected the citizens from harm during bombardments.

A fabulous blue and yellow creation overlooking the port, a hotel by the name Hotel Welcome, is the revamped one where Cocteau used to fraternize with the local sailors in the 1920s in a haze of opium; a room here with a balcony overlooking the port would be an ideal place to stay.
